When Kathleen Baillie — known lovingly as Medium Kat — first felt spirit brush against her life, the big, uncomfortable questions followed: Who am I? Why is this happening to me? Instead of letting those questions spin into a lifetime of searching, Kathleen did something radically simple: she turned inward and asked spirit directly. What she received back was short, clear, and oddly practical — a quiet reminder that the deepest wisdom lives inside us, waiting for one courageous step: to ask. In this conversation with Mystic Mag, Kathleen shares how awakening rewired her relationship to doubt, authority, and the endless hunt for external answers. She talks about the surprising ease of receiving guidance once you stop overcomplicating the process, and why love — not doctrine or technique — becomes the most reliable compass. Expect down-to-earth stories, gentle provocations, and small, actionable seeds you can plant to start trusting your inner knowing. As Kathleen puts it: “I am the creator and the created. I am love.” Simple, profound, and true — a reminder that the question and the answer can live together.
You often say, “Who am I?” is one of the most profound questions we can ask. How has your personal answer to that question evolved from your awakening to where you are today?
The question “Who am I?” really has many layers to it. Who am I at the highest level, the greatest essence of our being, is ultimately the realization that we are all one consciousness, an aspect of divinity, having its own unique experience, experiencing itself, in the physical world. Both the masculine and the feminine. The awareness that you are divine. I am divine. We are divine and we are all part of that divinity, unique aspects of it.
I have asked this question of myself, in so many ways, since my awakening. One of the most profound responses I ever received from my guides was, “You are the creator and the created,” playing to the idea that we are co creators of our reality here on Earth. I like this consideration, as it suggests that we are never alone, not truly. Part of us is always connected, supported and loved and connected to a greater loving awareness.
Yet, if you ask the question at a more physical, lower level, you will discover there are many labels we attach to our lives, mother, daughter, sister, founder, director, medium etc, we play so many roles in life, some overlapping and others quite separate. So who we are without these labels, is really how you get to the infinite source and away from your human limitations, into a more infinite space.
You can also explore the question by looking back at who you were, to understand, who you can be next? This can help you unlock past behaviours, patterns, release you from karmic patterns and to explore greater aspects of your soul. You can have quite an adventure with it. As a past life regression therapist and soul reading I have found that past life regressions and soul readings can be a great tool to unlock this potential and pinpoint things you need to be aware of, to help expand your awareness.
You describe being born partially deaf and turning inward as a child — how do you feel that early silence shaped your ability to tune into spirit and intuition later in life?
I think deafness in childhood helped me turn inwards and become more intuitive from an early age. I had to feel my way and be more observant. Later, as my hearing issues were resolved by incredible doctors, I think it gave me an appreciation for the work health care professionals do and removed some of my fear and apprehensions around medical interventions. I am really extremely lucky and profoundly grateful to those people who improved my life and gave me hearing back.
What type of services do you offer?
I am very well trained in many things. A former retail executive, I coach, I read for people mediumistically, intuitively, provide soul readings, spirit channelings and support those with PTSD and emotional issues connected to grief, through hypnosis, CBT, breathwork, reiki, lucid dreaming and other healing modalities. I am an oracle of knowledge, having been surrounded by amazing people, who have supported my growth and enabled me to help others.
Many people hesitate to trust their inner knowing. From your perspective, what is the first simple step someone can take to begin trusting their intuition more deeply?
Trust is such an easy word to say, and a very difficult one to follow. I think it’s a process and that the first step is realising and appreciating that it takes time to attune ourselves to the vibration that can hold space for that trust and help us create a trusting relationship with our intuition. You will never get overnight success. You learn slowly with little wins and build up to bigger leaps of faith. When people realise this, they take the pressure of their shoulders and give themselves breathing space. Trust is a process.
Sound and vibration became a significant part of your path, especially after your time in India. Can you share one powerful experience where sound profoundly shifted your spiritual or physical state?
I have had so many profound experiences with sound and vibration. I really believe that sound is orderly and it helps the body reorder things. In my awakening, it removed and shifted past life blocks. One of the most profound experiences I could share was in India, at the start of my sound journey. My first experience. My spirit guides removed a block of energy from my throat, to open the throat, on the eve of Maha Shivarati. Shiva is the India god of the throat area, so I am convinced that the date was of great significance to my spirit team. I had not intentionally gone to India for this ceremony. I was on a retreat in Goa, simply on holiday. I was actually in a massage session when my trance guides came in and directed the therapist to amend what she was doing to adhere to their instructions. She agreed. The next thing we knew, we heard the most loud, audible sound emerge from my body and I was like, what was that? She explained it was an energy block of some description shifting. With every instruction we heard the block move down the left hand side of my body, until it reached the root of my spine and then it went up the central spine to the throat, taking the block out of the body, through my mouth. When the blockage was released, sounds and frequencies, I have never heard or made before, came singing out of my soul. Notes I am sure some singers would be proud to hit. High notes and incredible frequencies. It left a very profound impression on me. I realised later that it was changing my vibrational state and frequency, altering my brain waves, releasing karmic blocks and preparing me for the spiritual work I was about to do. I guess the first time is always the most memorable one but from that stage onwards, I have started educating myself in the art of healing others with sound.
Spiritual awakenings are often described as beautiful but can also be exhausting and disruptive. What advice would you give to someone currently in the midst of an awakening who feels overwhelmed?
Get help and support. There is a fine line between awakening and mental breakdown or psychosis. Everyone talks about it as if it’s a marriage made in heaven but my realisation is that it’s a fine line that you tread between madness and bliss. I was lucky that my spirit team, the divine and angels guided me to a happy ending but you really need coaching and support and the understanding of someone who has experienced something like this and knows what to do or a great seer. I have helped many people overcome their fear and manage their energy during an awakening, which can be, I agree very disruptive and very powerful. Being safe during an awakening is key. It is something that is very misunderstood. I liken it to a survival test, one developed by spirit, to test your faith, courage and rock it.
