What inspired you to pursue your career and can you tell us a little bit more about Acceptance and Integration Training® (AAIT™)?

When I first started my undergraduate degree, I intended to major in mathematics. I had a strong desire to become a high school math teacher and coach football and baseball. However, my path took a different turn when I stumbled upon a fascinating psychology course. I fell in love with psychology and decided to switch gears, pursuing it as my undergrad degree. I contemplated my next steps and the direction I wanted to take with my education.

Typically, it begins with many of us on the therapist’s couch. I, too, sought help and therapy to navigate through significant trauma my family and I experienced, including traumatic grief and loss. This experience led me to explore psychology and subsequently earn my master’s degree in social work. I became a licensed clinical social worker and have never looked back since.

The theory behind my approach lies in the belief that psycho-emotional and interpersonal distress can be alleviated by accepting and integrating associated charged energies. This integration fosters greater self-acceptance, understanding of others, and the ability to handle triggering situations skillfully. Embodiment practices promote ongoing self-care for both practitioners and clients.

Acceptance and Integration Training® is an innovative and emerging approach to mental health treatment. The protocols incorporated in this treatment are highly effective. What’s particularly advantageous is that clients don’t need to rehash their entire story to find relief. Instead, we focus on specific key elements.

What sets Acceptance and Integration Training® apart is the extensive training it offers. It’s not merely a surface-level introduction; it involves in-depth education. We provide regular training sessions for mental health professionals. Currently, we have a fellowship training group that spans seven months. Participants meet monthly, learn new protocols, and immerse themselves in this work to provide clients with the healing they need and deserve. This isn’t a quick weekend training but a deep dive into the subject, making practitioners true experts in this approach.

You specialize in helping individuals with a wide range of challenges, from depression to addiction to self-esteem issues. How do you tailor your therapeutic approach to meet the unique needs of each client?

What truly helped me advance and evolve into what I would describe as a master therapist was receiving training under master-level therapists. Throughout my journey, driven by my career in sports and my inherent competitiveness, I always aspired to excel in whatever I pursued. I started by seeking out individuals who excelled in their therapy practices. Along the way, I had the privilege of studying under some remarkable mentors. However, it was when I encountered Melanie McGee McGhee, the founder of Acceptance and Integration Training®, that I found exactly what I was searching for to assist my clients with a wide range of concerns.

The use of Acceptance and Integration Training® has been instrumental in my journey. It has allowed me to elevate my therapeutic abilities and provide healing to the people I work with, including myself. Acceptance and Integration Training® has significantly contributed to my personal well-being, and I’ve witnessed its positive impact on my clients as well.

Many of the issues you address in therapy involve deep emotional and psychological pain. How do you foster a safe and non-judgmental environment for your clients to explore and heal from these difficult experiences?

That’s a good question. It all begins with self-care. I believe a truly effective therapist should engage in their own therapy and self-improvement. In the realm of Acceptance and Integration Training®, we employ a diverse array of protocols designed to alleviate psychological tension and suffering. For me, it starts with self-care. When I work with protocols, many of which are rooted in PEAT (Prime Energy Activation Transcendence) processing techniques developed by Zivorad Slavinski and other protocols by Vladimir Stojakovic and used within the AAIT™ model, I find that I am able to reduce my reactivity.

By reducing my own reactivity, I am better equipped to maintain a state of ease. This, in turn, enables me to engage with clients and support them in working through deep emotional blockages that they find challenging. If I don’t prioritize my own well-being and self-care, I can’t effectively guide others through the difficult territory they’re navigating. It’s essential for me to do my personal work, and through Acceptance and Integration Training®, I’ve experienced significant personal growth. This, in turn, equips me to help individuals who are experiencing pain and struggles in their lives.

What type of services do you offer?

Typically, I primarily offer individual therapy and group therapy, I train mental health professionals across the United StatesOften. When people come to see me, it’s because they specifically want to engage in Acceptance and Integration Training®(AAIT™). Additionally, I also facilitate group therapy sessions.

The individuals I typically work with are often dealing with a range of challenges, including depression, anxiety, sports performance anxiety, and trauma, such as post-traumatic stress disorder. I also work with those who are having trouble managing various stressors of life. Furthermore, I provide support to fathers who are navigating the daily challenges of raising and caring for their families while striving to be the best they can be and helping them discover their own best selves as well.

In your experience, what are some common misconceptions about therapy, and how do you address them when working with new clients?

Yeah, that’s a good question. I believe there are some misconceptions about therapy that need clarification. One common misconception is that you have to revisit your entire past to begin the healing process. While some traditional therapy models may require that, in Acceptance and Integration Training®, we do gather background information. However, the key approach is to address one problem at a time. In each session, the expectation is that you can experience healing or potentially resolve a specific emotional blockage during that session.

Another misconception is the idea that seeking help for mental well-being is a sign of weakness or failure because one can’t handle it alone. To me, mental health is just like physical health. It can range from extreme cases, such as dealing with hallucinations and delusional disorders, to the everyday stressors of life. Just as you take medicine for a common cold or visit a doctor to prevent it from becoming a sinus infection, it’s the same for mental well-being. If you don’t tend to your inner state and take responsibility for your well-being, stressors can escalate into more significant issues like depression or strained relationships with loved ones. You may find yourself functioning below your optimal state, which could have been avoided through self-care and tending to your mental well-being.

The concept of self-care is essential in maintaining mental and emotional well-being. Could you share some practical self-care strategies that you often recommend to your clients?

The basics of self-care are essential to our overall well-being. First and foremost, ensuring you get adequate sleep is crucial. Insufficient sleep can have a significant impact on your mental and physical health. It’s an aspect of self-care that often doesn’t receive enough attention.

Additionally, paying attention to what we eat is vital. The quality of food we consume plays a crucial role in our overall health. Staying physically active, if our bodies are capable, is also important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Positive interactions with the people we care about and love contribute to our well-being. These connections help foster emotional and psychological health. Moreover, our general outlook on ourselves, others, and life itself plays a pivotal role in our overall well-being.

In my work with clients and in my own life, I teach the use of specific integration protocols from Acceptance and Integration Training® (AAIT™). A key principle from AAIT™ is taking responsibility for tending to our own inner state as a source of our freedom. When we encounter emotional blockages during our daily lives, such as limiting thought patterns or unresolved traumas, it’s important to address them to free ourselves from their constraints.

By focusing on self-care, we start to recognize that our true self is a being that can place us in a more optimal state of being. This allows us to be less entangled in the narratives of our past, ultimately leading to greater personal freedom and well-being.

What do you like the most about your profession?

I think it’s the ability to help people to see that they’re able to wake up from the nightmare of who they think they are.
