Can you share more about your personal journey and how it led to the creation of BE
Light Transformative Therapy?

I am someone who has always been passionate about human health, but who always struggled to find her place in the world. My development and ability to live up to my full potential was crippled by very low self-esteem and a constant sense of never belonging. As an adult, this included plenty of self-sabotaging behavior, depression and even suicidal ideation.

At the age of 36, I encountered an absolute angel – a life coach of sorts – who truly saved me from myself. He helped me to understand my past wounds, put them into context, and reframe them as gifts that allowed me to learn so much that I otherwise would have never known about. He pulled me out of the darkness and taught me that neither the past nor the future matter. The only thing that matters is who you are BEING in the present moment.

As long as my conscious awareness allows it, I choose to BE light in every given moment. That is the way I want to show up in the world and be of service to others. A reminder that there is so much beyond the darkness. That healing is possible. That each of us has the potential to inspire and make the world a better place. This is why I named my company BE Light. It is as much a daily reminder to me as it is to everyone who encounters my work.

How did your struggles with shyness and fear of judgment manifest into physical
symptoms like IBS, and how did you overcome them?

The mind-body connection is so powerful. We see that increasingly, even in scientific literature. My shyness and fear of judgment were based on feelings of shame and not being good enough. I believe those to be some of the most destructive emotions a person can carry. They spark an inflammatory response in the body. And when that inflammatory response goes unresolved for an extended period of time, it wreaks havoc on the physical body, not to mention a person’s mental health. For me, these emotions mostly manifested as a severely dysregulated nervous system – meaning my body never felt safe – and really debilitating gut dysbiosis.

Overcoming it was not an overnight job. First, I had to understand how much my negative emotions were impacting my physical health. Then, I had to acknowledge what those negative emotions were and where they came from. I had to learn to reframe them; see them as a gift rather than a curse. And throughout that process of unlearning and relearning, I was always implementing lots of self-care practices: breathing, movement, fascial release, sound therapy, chanting, mantra, journaling, dietary adjustments, fasting, etc.

It takes time, patience and self-compassion to come out the other side. And it’s still not always perfect. I still occasionally get a flare-up. But now, I have so many tools for addressing that. Whenever I get inflamed now, I know it’s just my body talking to me; telling me something is out of balance and inviting me to find my center again.

What is BREATH for you?

Breath is life. That is undeniable. We don’t survive more than a few minutes without our breath. But what does that really mean to me? Breath is our essence. It is the stuff that animates us. It inflates us – like a balloon – giving us our individual shapes, postures, movement habits and personalities. Our breath is our life-long companion, there with us every moment, from the time we enter this physical world until the time we leave it. It is a tool we can tap into in order to self-soothe, to find acute focus, to energize ourselves, or to prepare for deep, regenerative sleep. It is our flexibility, our resilience, and our ability to adapt. It is the bridge between our physical world and whatever this thing is that we call spirituality.

Breath is everything! Without it, none of us would ever have the privilege of experiencing life, with all its pleasures and its struggles. Our breath is a gift, which too many of us forget to appreciate until we start to lose it.

In founding BE Light Transformative Therapy, what specific tools and approaches do
you incorporate to help individuals positively transform their lives?

BE Light Transformative Therapy has taken on many forms over the years, and continues to evolve. Right now, I mostly teach functional breathing strategies to improve daily life; including increased energy, reduced pain, enhanced focus and improved sleep. I also teach a lot of self-massage – mostly from a myofascial perspective – and nervous system regulation techniques – including breathing, compassionate touch and sound therapy – for stress reduction, improved function and overall well-being.

I see BE Light developing new programming this year focused specifically on Women’s Health. It will encompass women-focused fitness, nutrition, breathing, beauty and stress management designed to help middle-aged women age with grace, continuing to thrive with strength and beauty into their later years.

BE Light is also passionate about protecting and stewarding the environment. After all, there can be no human health without planetary health.

How has the challenging context of the COVID-19 pandemic influenced your perspective
on life, and how do you see it as an opportunity for greater impact in your work?

For me, and I believe for many holistic practitioners, the pandemic was a great reminder that it is critical for us to pause as a global community and truly consider the direction we are headed. Are the choices that individual nations are making really aligned with the global good? Are our choices supportive of or harmful to human and planetary health? I think the pandemic was a marvelous example of how quickly humans are able to slow down, shift gears and reprioritize their values when it is absolutely essential to their survival.

In coming out of the pandemic, my hope is that humans have developed a deeper value for their physical bodies and the importance of managing their health. My hope is that there is more of a focus on prevention than ever before, and also a lasting sense of empathy and compassion for all the other beings with whom we share this planet.

In terms of my own work, I feel blessed by the changes this pandemic forced upon me. There are certainly limitations to the online experience, but for me, transitioning my business online has allowed me to reach tens of thousands more people than I could have ever dreamed of working with in my small therapeutic office in Manhattan. It has been an absolute gift to build my “tribe”, and I look forward to seeing how the many ways I dream of being of service to my community, come to fruition in the next several years.
