What key insights from your spiritual pilgrimage have shaped the coaching programs you offer today?

Actually, I began writing the book that I would turn into my programs while I was on my walkabout. I was told at the time of my pilgrimage that I wouldn’t know the full import of what I was doing for 10-20 years. It is now 23 years later and I can see what it became.  I think the most important thing that came out of the journey for me personally is understanding where I ended and other people began.
Learning my own edges/energetic boundaries was crucial to being able to separate my journey from others’ and therefore focus on my own transformation and healing.  This is a crucial part of what I teach to others in my programs and retreats. Some other insights I discovered along the way:
  • Transparency – The LiveJournal I kept throughout the journey was what was true for me at the time, and with very few exceptions, I shared my feelings and I didn’t edit my experiences . This was new. VERY new. I had never before let myself be so at risk of people’s judgment. It was a statement of my ability to manage my own emotions in the event that they did judge. I use this concept in a safe container in my group programs. By letting people see that they are not alone in their feelings/responses and by making the container safe by not allowing people to coach one another, I give people a chance to practice being seen in a safe space.
  • Healthy Relationships – I also learned how to have a healthy relationship. I had met a man at the beginning of my journey who was practicing polyamory at the time. He had two other lovers. I was on walkabout and had no idea where I would land at the end, so I felt that I had no right to demand exclusivity, so I learned how to hold the relationship more lightly than any I had been in before. I learned to start a relationship with the understanding that it could end at any moment and it forced me to change how I held myself and my power. It was a really valuable lesson for me – one I have continued to this day. And one I teach my clients in my programs.
  • Trust in the Universe. I had trust in the Universe as a child, but as I got older, my need to control my environment to keep myself safe overshadowed this trust. In the process of waiting for signs and following where the Universe took me on this journey, I rediscovered this trust. I work with my clients on re/establishing their trust in the Universe as well to create peace and calm in their lives.
  • Balancing trust and choice. In the end, I learned that I also needed to step up and make choices rather than abdicating my power to the Universe as I had done at the start of the journey. This is a common conversation I have with my clients – understanding that the Universe is your partner, not your parent and then stepping into their power to make impactful choices in their own lives.

How did turning your book into an online program transform your approach to helping spiritual practitioners succeed?

As my book on personal and spiritual evolved, I would give it to people in my life who expressed an interest.  I would come back years later and ask if they ever finished it.  Everyone would say “no, I’m still thinking about chapter X”. Which chapter was different for each person, but they all said they hadn’t finished it.  I asked how long they had been thinking about it and the answers would be 3 months, 2 years, etc.  I would ask if they realized they were stuck and they didn’t. This is when I realized the book didn’t work as a book – that it needed to come with coaching to get the people unstuck.

Spiritual practitioners in particular need to learn to evolve themselves more than the average person because they have to keep ahead of their clients to stay on task. The content from the book, combined with the coaching makes this process easier and more efficient.  98% of the effort of spiritual growth is spent doing two things – figuring out what you need, and then finding the place to get it.  This program provides those two answers for those on a spiritual path.  Therefore, it is fairly simple to do the actual work itself.

What strategies do you teach spiritual practitioners to balance financial success with the heart-centered work they love?

When you discover and embrace the core essence of who you are, you find the path to financial success in your spiritual work.  From there, it is simply coalescing this essence into a signature offer and then committing to that offer (not putting out a million other offerings) that makes you successful.  These are the things I work with spiritual practitioners on.

How has hosting Spirit Sherpa impacted your journey as a transformational shaman and coach?

Hosting Spirit Sherpa and now also the Spirit Guides podcast has been so fulfilling.  I’ve gotten to meet some of my mentors, I’ve gotten to share my knowledge and wisdom, and I’ve built a business from these podcasts. I love podcasting. And this is one of the things I recommend to my spiritual practitioners – market the way you love to. No other marketing has ever been as successful for me as the podcasts – and it’s because I love them, so my energy is wide open and welcoming, rather than stuck in the ugh-liness of “I don’t wanna do this!”. When your spirit is in alignment with your marketing, that is when it is most effective.

What advice would you give to spiritual practitioners struggling to find financial and personal fulfillment in their work?

Find your core essence, make that the center of your offering. Offer that one signature offer to one target market and commit to it for one year.  Do nothing else during that year! Just market that one thing. Will you get tired of talking about it?  Yes. Will you feel like you are bothering people with talking about the same thing over and over again? Yes. (But most people won’t feel this way because they only see a small fraction of what you put out.) Will people finally understand who you are, what you offer, and why they should work with you? Yes. Your commitment will bring in the people who resonate with that offering and help them to understand why they need what you offer.

When you find/create something that works, don’t stop doing it! Entrepreneurs get tired of their own marketing and will often stop doing something that is working out of boredom with it.  Don’t fall into that trap.  When something works, keep doing it until it stops working, then tweak it slightly until it works again. Rinse and repeat.  It’s not exciting, but the income it makes you is, so stick with it.
