Lisa Cohen’s journey from broadcast television to holistic kinesiology is a testament to the power of frequency, balance, and healing. With a deep understanding of how the body, mind, and spirit store emotions and experiences, she helps clients release stress and restore harmony. In this interview for Mystic Mag, Lisa shares how her background in media shaped her unique approach, the transformative impact of kinesiology, and how she balances her passion for healing with family life.
What inspired you to transition from counseling and a career in broadcast television to holistic kinesiology?
I started work in Broadcast Television when I left high school with many and varied work experiences and people to work with and befriend. After a personal time of learning, I trained as a counsellor, and it was during this time that I realised that all stress, distress and emotional upheaval is also stored and held in the body. All memories, experiences, subconscious thought and beliefs are held in a person’s body – in their felt sense – I call it the mind-body-spirit connection. Once I realised that all we experience is a frequency held and stored in our body, mind and spirit (in muscles, nervous system, organs, skin and even blood), it was a no-brainer to find a modality that addressed and uses the obvious frequency modulating healing potential.
How does your background in manipulating light, color, and sound frequencies influence your approach to working with the frequencies of the body, emotions, and spirit?
My work in Broadcast Television, manipulating the light, colour and sound frequencies you see at home has influenced the approach to my Kinesiology enormously. Firstly, manipulating frequency is a natural environment for me to be in. A big part of my TV work is actually problem solving and following signal path to find errors or faulty pieces of equipment – so in Kinesiology, I get to explore, problem solve and find new pathways that lead to calm, flow and balance – a perfect resolution to out of tune frequencies within to tune them in to find a beautiful heart, a clear mind and peaceful spirit.
The techniques used in my practice are pure frequency altering modalities – acupressure, flower essences, essential oils, EFT, meditation and of course, light, colour and sound directly on and around the body.
Can you share a memorable experience where kinesiology made a significant impact on a client’s emotional or physical well-being?
I can recall a girl, aged 13, who came in with significant ‘tic’ movements in her arms, legs and face. During the first session, we worked on helping her nervous system find calm in her chaos, helped her system find alternative ways to ‘move the stress’ and by the end of the first session, her eyes were still, her arms barely moving and she felt calmer and more at ease. After three sessions of using acupressure, EFT and essential oils, amongst other things, her ‘tics’ were gone completely, leaving her feeling more confident, able and happy, allowing her to be the 13 year old she wanted to be.
Another client came in, not feeling ‘himself’. After suffering a stroke 6 months before hand, he was still not ‘right’ and felt ‘out of balance’. We explored the felt sense and emotions of not being able to do the things he used to do so easily, and how that effected his ego, confidence and everyday life. This man loved to surf and after is stroke he found this very difficult, which greatly reduced his sense of self-worth. We worked together on his physical balance and his emotional and spiritual balance, and after a few months, he was feeling more confident and content in his ability and ‘new way of being’, and able to get back on the surf-board!
One woman I worked with stands out for me. She came in feeling lost and confused about her life – years after a divorce, her children had left home, and she was living alone with a lifetime of memories, guilt, uncertainty and unprocessed trauma. We worked together regularly for a few years, and now I can say she is loving her life – feeling calm, enjoying participation in community groups and having re-ignited the relationships with her children, she truly is living a joyful life. We are still in contact and I love hearing how her life is so different from when we first met.
The majority of my clients are Mothers who are exhausted, overwhelmed and out of control – and feeling the effects of these states on their bodies and spirit. Inevitably, we explore their own childhood and how the many beliefs and perspectives that are created in the family of origin, that carry through to her own ‘mothering experience’. One woman in particular came to see that her own struggle to be seen and heard by her own parents, in fact her early trauma, was directly effecting her ability to parent in the present moment and find the calm she really wanted in her parenting. We worked together to understand and be aware of how her childhood beliefs and experiences were playing with her present, how her childhood survival techniques were not serving her well as an adult and parent. We were able to honour what had passed, clear the stress in the body, the stagnation in her mind, and so allow her spirit to come out to play and feel a part of her life again. She was able to Mother her children from a place of calm, ease and confidence, as well as gently offer herself the compassion needed when she felt her ‘inner little girl’ needing a hug.
How do you balance your personal life, including your roles as a mother and wife, with your passion for healing and holistic practices?
Ahh… this is a constant battle and juggle! I have not perfected this yet, but am always trying to find that balance.
I have personal practices that help me remain in a place of ease and calm – every Sunday morning I observe a ritual of meditation, journaling and card readings.
The things that help me remain calm, at ease and in-tune include swimming, walking amongst the trees, watching the sunset, Kinesiology sessions (of course), and a local group sound bath.
I try to give myself days off, daily times of quiet, and moments of creativity. Movement for me is important – walks, the gym, pilates, dancing, laughing…
My now teenage kids tell me to loosen up more, so I try to adhere to their advice, and the advice I give my clients to calm, flow & balance.
I also have an amazing husband, who is my life partner, who I share the life ‘duties’ with, who supports me and helps me to laugh more.
The obvious way I balance all aspects of my life is to simply ‘love what I do and do what I love’ (Robbie Zeck) – whether that is making sandwiches, driving a child to training or helping someone heal the troubles they are experiencing.
What advice would you give to someone curious about holistic kinesiology but unsure of how it might benefit them?
Many people ask how Holistic Kinesiology can help them… In fact, most people aren’t sure how to pronounce it – Kin-ees-iology. There are many different kinds of Kinesiology, and ‘Holistic Kinesiology’ being one of the many is the only one that addresses the mind, body and spirit as one.
I receive regular Kinesiology sessions, and with this, as well as my experience as a practitioner, there is always a calm, an ease, a clarity, a peace that comes in mind, body and spirit. All my clients have a ‘look’ about them after a session – more colour in their face, an ease in their whole being and a sparkle back in their eyes.
Holistic Kinesiology can help any person, of any age, with pain reduction, anxiety, hormone balance, sleep, phobias, digestive issues, balance, intergenerational trauma (with specialist training, yes, I have that), grief, anger and more.
The other great aspect of Holistic Kinesiology is that you can obviously have a session in person, but also remotely online!
