11 Statistics about Addiction

Substance abuse and process addictions can have a damaging effect on both sufferers and their loved ones. Here are 11 statistics about addiction, its prevalence, and its impact.

1. Drugs Are a Major Killer in the U.S.

Number-of-deaths-from-overdoses-in-the-US-March-2015-September-2022

Over the last decade, drug overdose deaths have risen steadily, with a spike that began in the latter half of 2020 — likely due in part to the stresses and changes in daily life caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Today, the culture around addiction is shifting, and many experts and programs view addiction as a disease rather than stigmatizing it as a result of poor choices. Studies show that working to reduce the harms caused by addiction — including overdose, infections, and criminal recidivism — is an important pillar in prevention, treatment, and recovery, and can help save lives.

2. The Opioid Crisis Continues to Plague the U.S.

Share-of-drug-overdose-eaths-by-drug-used

The use of opium as a pain reliever dates at least as far back as ancient Rome, and the ancients were already aware of its addictive and deadly nature. However, problems escalated when scientists isolated the plant’s active chemical, morphine, in the early 1800s. In the middle of that century, the hypodermic needle was invented and proved to be a more effective means of drug delivery, which further increased rates of addiction and overdose.

Until 2013, heroin was the leading cause of overdose deaths in the U.S. This marked the early part of the American fentanyl crisis — a synthetic opioid that has overtaken the illicit drug market, worsening significantly through the Coronavirus pandemic. Today, an estimated 117 Americans die each day from the drug.

3. Drugs Cause Hundreds of Thousands of Deaths Every Year

Statistics-about-the-number-of-deaths-from-drug-overdoses-in-the-US

The number of deaths caused by drugs in the U.S. is truly staggering, and overdose death rates are on a constant rise. This is despite the fact that addiction treatment has become more accessible and acceptable.

Out of all the U.S. states, Maryland has the highest percentage of drug-related deaths compared to other causes. A total of 4.68% of annual deaths in the state can be attributed to overdose. Conversely, Nebraska has the lowest rate with 0.95% of deaths caused by drug overdose.

Fentanyl use has been on the rise since 2013 and is the leading cause of overdoses. In 2022 alone, 109,680 people lost their lives to overdose, primarily due to fentanyl. A major factor for this is the drug’s potency; it’s estimated to be 100 times stronger than morphine. Another contributing factor is the unregulated nature of the illegal drug trade. Traffickers mix and cut fentanyl with other drugs, and users often don’t know they’re taking fentanyl at all, or don’t know its purity.

4. Alcohol Is Not as Harmless as It Seems

Statistics-about-the-impact-of-alcohol-addiction

Compared to other drugs, alcohol has a much higher degree of social acceptance. This means that it’s easier to buy and that high-functioning alcoholics may continue to drink without fully realizing the extent of their addiction. However, long-term alcohol abuse can have devastating effects on a person’s health.

The liver is the hardest-hit organ, with 19.1% of all alcohol-related deaths being caused by alcoholic liver disease and alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD). An occasional drink is fine for most people, but drinking too much over a long period of time is responsible for 53.7% of all deaths caused by alcohol. Every single day, 385 Americans die due to alcohol misuse.

5. The Liver Is No Match for Alcohol Abuse

Alcohol-related-deaths-by-cause-in-the-US

A third of chronic alcoholics die from liver-related conditions. The liver is a unique organ in that it can recover from severe damage. It’s even able to re-grow to a normal size after as much as 90% of its tissue has been removed. However, alcohol is one of the few things that can push it beyond repair.

Liver disease is responsible for most deaths associated with chronic alcohol abuse. Alcohol poisoning, on the other hand, is responsible for most cases of acute alcohol-related deaths. Alcohol is also involved in 10.4% of all suicides, and alcohol dependence is associated with a ten-fold increased risk for suicide.

Alcohol is dangerous not only to the person who consumes it, but also to those around them. Driving under the influence (DUI) can be deadly to the driver, the passengers, and innocent people on the road.

6. Habitual Marijuana Use Is Increasingly Prevalent

Statistics-about-Marijuana's-addictiveness

In the U.S., smoking marijuana has become increasingly normalized over the last decade, both legally and culturally. Between 30 and 40 million Americans smoke marijuana each year, overtaking the number of tobacco smokers across the country. While marijuana is often seen as harmless, it can be addictive.

Marijuana doesn’t cause chemical dependence and withdrawal like other substances, but it can be habit-forming and cause a behavioral addiction. A large number of users have a use disorder, and 1 in 10 develop a more severe addiction and are unable to control their use.

Interestingly, minors are more likely to form a cannabis addiction than adults. Researchers at UCL and King’s College London believe that the increased disruption to relationships caused by cannabis use, the effect of the drug on developing brain tissue, and minors’ evolving sense of identity could all be contributing factors.

7. Behavioral Addictions Are All Too Common

Statistics-about-the-prevalence-of-different-behavioral-addictions

Behavioral addictions, also known as process addictions, refer to being dependent on a set of behaviors. Some of the most common addictions of this type include gaming, gambling, shopping, food, social media and the internet as a whole, and sex-related dependencies.

On the surface, these addictions may seem less harmful than substance use disorders. However, they can be just as likely to have destructive effects on the lives of both the addicts and their loved ones.

Every type of behavioral addiction leaves its own unique trail of destruction on its victims’ lives, but what they have in common is that they can lead people to withdraw from society, neglect their responsibilities, and hurt those close to them. Gambling and shopping addictions, for instance, are particularly scary for the families of addicts, due to the impact they can have on their shared finances.

8. A Gambling Addiction Is Expensive

Statistics-about-problem-gambling

Gambling may not have a direct effect on a person’s health, but it can have disastrous consequences when it comes to their life, the state of their finances, and familial relationships.

Gambling is also no longer limited to spending time at a casino or compulsively buying scratchcards. The prevalence of smartphones and the internet has made gambling more accessible. These days, it’s even a part of watching sports and playing video games, opening it up to a much younger demographic than ever before.

Funding a gambling habit is so difficult that many addicts turn to crime. A study from the Gambling Research Exchange in Ontario found that around half of gambling addicts commit crimes, often to fund their gambling habits.

9. Gaming Addicts Are at Increased Risk of Mental Disorders

Share-of-internet-and-gaming-addicts-with-each-comorbid-condition

Video game and internet addictions are generally seen as more benign than most addictions. However, there is a strong correlation between mental health issues and video game addiction, and the latter can greatly impact the former.

A systematic review exploring the correlation between gaming addiction and mental health outcomes found that problematic gaming behavior was often associated with an increased prevalence of depression, anxiety, ADHD, and OCD — along with lower self-esteem, self-control, and general well-being.

Showing that gaming causes depression would be difficult and may not be factual. People with pre-existing mental health challenges and trouble interacting with others often gravitate to video games as a source of comfort. Engaging in addictive gaming behaviors is often a result, and not a cause, of mental health challenges. However, excessive gaming and certainly addictions have been shown to exacerbate mental health issues like depression.

10. Internet and Social Media Addiction Is Increasingly Normalized

Statistics-about-the-prevalence-of-internet-and-social-media-addictions

For many, the internet and social media have become a part of their everyday life. Young people in particular often face immense social pressure from their peers to actively participate in social media. 15% of people between the ages of 23 and 38 admit they’re addicted to using social media, with girls and young single women being the most addicted group.

Social media addiction is also associated with double the normal rates of depression in teenagers. Young adults report negative feelings caused by social media, including a feeling of isolation when no one likes or comments on their posts, or feeling left out or excluded. Internet addiction can also facilitate addictions to porn, online shopping, online gaming, and other online activities, which can have similarly negative effects on mental health.

11. Sex Addiction Can Encourage Substance Abuse

Statistics-about-the-prevalence-and-common-comorbidities-of-sex-addiction

Over 20 million people in the United States are battling sexual addiction, a number that is expected to rise with the increased access to sexually explicit material provided by the internet. Compulsive viewing of pornographic material is also common, with up to 6% of adults being addicted.

Sex addiction is often accompanied by substance abuse issues. Many addicts engage in promiscuous behaviors while under the influence of substances, creating a mental association of being high with sex. Additionally, sex may also intensify the experience, as their neural pathways are being affected by both sexual behaviors and their chemical high.

Sex addiction sufferers might compulsively engage in high-risk sexual behaviors such as anonymous partners and unprotected sex — after which they’re left with feelings of shame, guilt, and self-loathing. This emotional aftermath can cause turmoil, which may drive sex addicts to turn to drugs and alcohol as an escape, creating an unhealthy cycle of drug use and sexual activity.

The Bottom Line

While awareness of addiction’s dangers has increased, it continues to be a widespread problem. The global economy has made addictive substances more accessible, and new technologies like gaming, the internet, and social media create new modes of addiction.

Some chemicals — such as methamphetamines, alcohol, and opioids — cause chemical dependencies that sufferers must recover from. But anything that causes dopamine to spike can create an addiction, including food, social media, and sexual activity.

Understanding addiction as a disease can help lower the stigma and shame that makes seeking treatment more difficult, while also allowing for more targeted treatments that have proven effective. If you or your loved ones suffer from any dependencies, the treatment centers I’ve listed can help.
