Can you explain the fundamental principles of breathwork and how it relates to spiritual and holistic healing?

The practice of Breathwork/ pranayama was crafted by advanced yogis who possessed an intuitive and experiential comprehension of prana’s impact on the human system. By harnessing the power of breath, they tapped into the pranic field to achieve equilibrium within the body and mastery over the mind. These practices aimed to prepare the body and mind to access elevated states of consciousness, ultimately facilitating a profound union with the transcendent reality.

How did you become interested in this practice?

The Pranayama practice that we share is put together by Swami Ramdev Baba ji in India, my mother was learning this practice from him in the 1990’s and I learnt it with her. But I really practiced and used it to heal myself in 2014 during a health crisis.

Breathwork is often considered a transformative experience. Can you share some powerful anecdotes or testimonials from participants in your retreats to illustrate its impact on their lives?

Review by Giselle:

My life has definitely been transformed since learning the breathwork. I saw some changes immediately during my first retreat 18 months ago. I came to the retreat with a host of health issues:  I had insomnia and was pretty reliant on sleep aids, including sleeping pills. I suffered from IBS, having had it since I was a teenager. And I had various bad habits (like biting my nails/fingers) that had also plagued me for most of my life. While at the retreat, every one of these issues markedly improved or disappeared. I couldn’t believe it; when I got home, my family couldn’t believe it. I was so encouraged that I have kept up the breathwork daily ever since. Some people take medicine every day to maintain their mental and physical health; I just do the breathwork. It centers me, helps to quiet my racing mind, and it quells much of the low-level anxiety that was causing all those health issues. I have gone back repeatedly to Vedanta for other retreats and every time I come away with new perspectives not just on my health but also on my relationships with others. Because of the things I have learned at Vedanta, I am calmer and more forgiving, and this has really improved my relationship with my spouse, my child, my colleagues, my neighbors, with everyone. Like everything in life, you have to keep up with the practice regularly to reap the benefits. But when the benefits are so clear, it’s a no-brainer, for me, to keep doing it.

Review by Brandon:

Pranayama has enabled me to understand how much unnecessary tension I’ve been carrying in my body.  It’s a defensive reaction, as if turning myself into a single piece of rock will protect me from everything in the world that might try to hurt me.  I used to be white-knuckled on flights, for example, thinking I could affect the airplane’s motion.  With the pranayama practices I’ve learned at Vedanta, I’m developing relaxation as a skill, recognizing when I tense muscles that aren’t involved in whatever I’m trying to do.  Instead of trying to fight the motion of the world around me, I’m learning to let myself be carried by it.

What type of services do you offer?

We offer 4 days / 3 nights Art of Breathwork Retreats, at the end of which the participants go back with a clear understanding of what stress is, how many types of stress there are and how stress affects health and their daily life. And a daily practice that will keep them healthy and stress free. We also offer Advance level Pranayama retreats for spiritual seekers.

In what ways does the practice of breathwork facilitate self-awareness and personal growth, and how do you guide participants in their self-discovery journey?

The practice of Pranayama brings about awareness of the self, we also share a No Mind Meditation as taught by Osho. The Breathwork works as an anchor:

No Mind Meditation is a practice in which you become a witness to your thoughts without judgment or attachment, simply existing as a pure observer. You allow thoughts to come and go freely. This awareness helps you become conscious of your thoughts throughout the day, enabling you to learn how to respond rather than react to them. It’s a transformative journey guided by mindfulness and self-awareness and self-discovery.

Many people may be new to the concept of breathwork. How do you address skepticism or resistance from individuals who are hesitant to participate in your retreats?

The phrase “proof is in the pudding” carries a profound message here: real evidence and validation emerge from actual experience or results. We ask the participants to do the practice daily for 21 days and see for themselves. Not to say that many have had profound experiences in the 4 days that they are here. Many participants learn for the first time how to really breathe!!! (Some of these participants are medical doctors and surgeons.)

Could you share some insights into the role of breathwork in stress reduction and its potential benefits for individuals dealing with chronic stress or anxiety?

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, excessive worry and stress deplete our vital prana, leading to exhaustion and depletion of the pranic fields. This depletion, in turn, triggers symptoms such as fatigue, depression, and disruptions in digestion and circulation. This harmful cycle can leave us physically and mentally weakened, making even minor disturbances evoke nervousness and anxiety. To counter this, the primary aim of breathwork/ pranayama is to constantly recharge and replenish the pranas, optimizing their function and restoring balance. As the pranas become sufficiently charged, they awaken to their full potential.

When we consciously engage in deep and intentional breathing, we invite a profound shift in our inner landscape. With each inhale and exhale, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, the guardian of calm and relaxation.

There are many types of pranayama techniques which are specifically designed for activating parasympathetic nervous systems and bringing the body our chronic stress and anxiety.

The practice we teach at Vedanta is designed for a stress free healthy life.
