The Power of Perspective - Dick Buchanan

The Power of Perspective - Dick Buchanan

MysticMag meets Dick Buchanan – psychic medium and hypnotist. As a child, Dick had paranormal experiences, including seeing auras and dreams of past lives, but these faded after a dismissive response from his mother at the age of five. In 1978, while studying in a New Haven graveyard, Dick had a transformative spiritual encounter that rekindled his psychic abilities, setting him on a new path of exploration and development.

Can you share more about your childhood in Philadelphia and the move to western PA? How did these early years shape your personality and interests?

As a child, I spent my early years in a rowhouse in Philadelphia. During that time, I had a unique connection with my spiritual guides and masters. Transitioning between the earthly realm and the spiritual one felt incredibly natural to me. However, my mother and grandmother couldn’t quite grasp what was happening. I remember a particular day when I was around five years old; my mother poked her head into my room and firmly declared, “There are no such things as ghosts.” After that, the sightings ceased, and I didn’t experience them again until my spiritual awakening, which occurred when I turned 32.

Meeting legendary musicians like Chuck Berry and Little Richard through your uncle’s work on ‘American Bandstand’ must have been incredible. Can you recount any memorable moments or experiences from those encounters?

Between the ages of 8 to 10, or maybe 11, I had a remarkable experience. My family lived in Philadelphia, and my uncle, who worked for Dick Clark’s record company, introduced me to some of the early rock and rollers from the 1950s and early 1960s. Meeting these legendary musicians left a lasting impression on me.
One of the most memorable encounters was with Paul Anka, who hails from Ottawa, Ontario. I also had the pleasure of meeting the Shirelles, led by Shirley Owens and the gals. They were always kind to me. Little Richard stood out as a dynamic and unforgettable individual. Chuck Berry was another iconic figure I had the privilege of meeting.
During that time, these artists would often lip-sync their performances for television broadcasts. It was intriguing to see how they delivered their music, even though they weren’t singing live. They managed to convey their charisma and talent, and some of their performances made it on the airwaves. This was a tremendously enjoyable and fascinating experience for me.

You mentioned seeing auras and experiencing connections with spirits at a young age. What led to your initial interest in these paranormal experiences, and how did your mother’s response impact your journey?

When I was about five years old, long before my spiritual journey truly began, I used to attend the Church of England or Anglican church in Philadelphia. This church was quite old, dating back to its construction in 1764. Curiosity led me to inquire about my relatives buried in the cemetery there. I asked my mother, “Where are they?” She answered, “They’re sleeping.” My five-year-old mind, always eager for more information, then asked, “When do they wake up?” Her response puzzled me further: “At the end of times.” My next question was, “When’s that?” Her reply was, “When Jesus comes back.” Naturally, I asked, “What happens when Jesus comes back?” She explained that no one knows but when he returns, all the people in graves rise up and go to heaven with him. I thought, “That’s great!” Then I asked, “What happens to the people who don’t go with him?” Her answer was unsettling: “They stay here and burn.” As a five-year-old, this didn’t quite make sense to me.
As I went for religious instruction and learned about concepts like the Holy Ghost, I couldn’t help but wonder whether ghosts actually existed or not. It all seemed a bit confusing.
My spiritual journey, however, truly began around the age of 32. At that point, I started exploring various religions, including Buddhism, Hinduism, and Zoroastrianism, seeking answers and a deeper understanding. I was eager to see what these different belief systems had to say about spirituality. Eventually, I synthesized my own beliefs, drawing from various sources.
The paranormal aspect of my journey began in 1978 when I was 32 years old. I was in a cemetery in New Haven, Connecticut, studying for an examination scheduled for the next day, which happened to be April 28th. It was during that moment that a spirit approached me and said, “It’s time to get going.” From that point forward, my life took a different path, filled with various spiritual experiences and discoveries.

Your spiritual awakening in 1978 marked a significant turning point. Can you describe the circumstances and feelings surrounding this experience, and how it influenced your decision to further develop your psychic abilities?

At the beginning of our conversation, I mentioned an encounter with Jesus Christ. It may sound unbelievable, but it happened. It felt like a manual for life, an annual JAM session with Jesus, so to speak. He appeared to me in a cemetery, which might seem like an unusual place, but his presence was incredibly calming, loving, and reassuring. The feeling that washed over me during that encounter was indescribable, but if I had to put it into words, it was pure peace.
Throughout my spiritual journey, I’ve communicated with various spirits, guides, and masters, but Jesus has always held a unique place in my experiences, as if he’s on a different level altogether.

Your range of abilities includes psychic mediumship, spiritual guidance, past life regressions, and more. Could you provide some insights into how these abilities have helped individuals improve their lives and find answers to their questions?

One of the most profound aspects of my work is helping people find answers to the age-old question: Is there life after death? Through my mediumship and communication with the spirit world, I often provide evidence that there is indeed life beyond the grave. This can be a source of comfort and assurance for many.
Another important aspect of my journey is sharing the perspective that life, despite its challenges, is fundamentally positive. Life is a gift, and when we choose to incarnate in this three-dimensional world, we embark on a brave and enriching journey. I believe that we gain more from our experiences here than we might on the other side. It’s like a spiritual testing ground, a fast track to personal and spiritual growth.
Navigating this world can be challenging because we’re constantly presented with a dichotomy between positive and negative experiences. The key is to find joy in the positive aspects of life while not succumbing to the negative. Staying in a balanced, neutral state whenever possible allows us to enjoy the positive moments and return to a centered state when needed.
As for accessing spirituality, meditation is a powerful tool. By quieting the mind and listening to our inner selves, we can tune out the constant external noise from sources like news, media, and technology. We live in a world of illusion, a time-space continuum where our inner reality shapes our external world. It’s all about perspective; what we see as gloom or joy depends on our personal outlook and the vibrations we emit into the universe.
In summary, life is a precious gift, and it’s important to embrace it as a positive and transformative experience. Accessing spirituality often involves turning inward, finding stillness, and recognizing the power of perspective in shaping our reality.
