Kajara, can you share the inspiration and vision behind the founding of Ra Sekhi Arts Temple, and how your personal healing journey influenced its creation?

I embarked on my healing journey for deeply personal reasons, rooted in the trauma I experienced during my childhood. As a mother, I was determined to be the best parent I could be, which led me to explore and research spirituality, crystals, and indigenous practices. This exploration connected me with many extraordinary teachers, who opened my eyes to the world of healing from an indigenous perspective. My spiritual journey intensified through participation in sweat lodges, which profoundly deepened my connection to the ancestral realm, and I began to receive messages from these spiritual experiences.
These messages guided me to new teachers and diverse practices, eventually leading me to start teaching classes myself. I underwent several significant initiations during this period, including the Reiki attunement and Sacred Woman initiation. This all happened within a two-year span, a time I now refer to as my “quickening.” During this phase, I fasted and tuned deeply into my personal healing, which helped me recover from a period of depression. After receiving the Reiki attunement, my energy shifted dramatically, and I felt divinely guided to teach energy healing specifically to melanated people, as this practice was largely unknown and unspoken of in our communities at the time. This was around 2000 or 2001, and it was not an easy path, as many were fearful or unfamiliar with the concept of energy work, crystals, and similar practices.
When I first began teaching, it was a slow and gradual process. For many years, I simply followed divine instructions, traveling to different cities and teaching community Reiki without any thought of creating a formal space. It wasn’t until about five years into my teaching that the idea of a temple even emerged. One of my students remarked that I should have a temple, saying, “This is a whole movement you have here.” It felt like spirit was speaking through them, and from that moment, the vision for the Ra Sekhi Arts Temple began to take shape.

Kemetic Reiki plays a significant role in your healing practices. How does Kemetic Reiki differ from other forms of Reiki, and what makes it particularly powerful for healing in the community?

Kemetic Reiki draws upon the ancient energy of Kemet, using symbols and practices from what is now called Egypt. The techniques we use are rooted in traditions that have been practiced for thousands of years. In fact, there are depictions on the walls of pyramids and other sacred sites that show various healing poses, evidence of this practice’s ancient origins. Kemetic Reiki primarily aligns with African-centered spiritual systems and integrates techniques from ancient Kemet, including crystal therapy, sound therapy, color therapy, aromatherapy, and herbal remedies. Our approach to healing is deeply holistic, extending beyond just the hands-on Reiki technique to incorporate these other natural healing modalities.
This practice emphasizes not only physical healing but also the purification of the mind, heart, emotions, spirit, and body. In addition to energy work through hand positions, we focus on the power of concentration, the strength of prayer, and the guidance of our ancestors. Connecting with our own spiritual powers and tuning into ancestral wisdom sets Kemetic Reiki apart from other forms of Reiki. While other Reiki traditions may not include working with spirit guides, crystals, or natural elements, our practice fully embraces these components.
Another key distinction is the use of Kemetic symbols, rather than Asian ones, in our healing work. These symbols carry a profound cultural and spiritual significance, enhancing the healing experience. Our practice is about much more than physical wellness; it’s about purifying and balancing all aspects of the self, making it a truly holistic approach to healing.

Ra Sekhi Arts Temple emphasizes healing from sickness, trauma, and racism using natural and traditional techniques. What are some specific methods or practices you teach to address these deep-rooted issues?

In our teachings, we place a strong emphasis on our cultural traditions, which play a vital role in helping us heal from the trauma we’ve experienced. A key aspect of this healing is understanding how to connect with and work alongside our ancestors and spirit guides. We also teach various techniques such as breathwork, meditation, clearing the auric field, and creating spiritual baths. Additionally, we focus on balancing the chakras using tools like crystals, sound healing, color therapy, and sacred symbols, which enhance the process of bringing the body into alignment.
This approach is expansive, recognizing that everything carries a frequency—whether it’s the colors we see, the crystals we use, or the sounds we hear. These frequencies interact with our own energy fields, and understanding this helps us harness them for healing. Just as the sensory experiences in our environment—what we see, taste, touch, hear, and feel—can throw us off balance, they also hold the power to restore and realign us. Our teachings center around these principles, providing a holistic framework for healing and spiritual growth.

Your community-centered approach aims to create a healing environment that promotes justice, balance, and harmony. How does the concept of Ma’at shape your work, and what role does it play in the healing journey of your members?

Our practice is deeply grounded in the principle of Ma’at, which forms the very foundation of our work. Ma’at is the goddess of love, law, order, balance, harmony, justice, and integrity. She teaches us how to live with integrity and guides us in how we should behave. In our practice, we work with Ma’at to help reprogram our thought patterns so that we can align ourselves with these virtues and live more truthfully and justly.
Ma’at also shows us how to maintain a light heart, helping us to release heavy emotions and remove blockages that prevent us from living righteously. She embodies the concept of righteousness, and when we engage in healing, it’s not just about the physical body. It’s also about healing the parts of us that may not act with integrity. Ma’at’s teachings guide us in healing not only our bodies but also our minds and hearts, so we can live with a light heart, embracing truth and righteousness.
This process is essential for true healing. By embracing the laws of Ma’at, we learn to transform how we speak, think, and act, allowing us to move through life with greater balance. Healing, in this sense, goes beyond the physical—it becomes a holistic journey toward living in alignment with the highest version of ourselves. It helps us live with purpose and power, in accordance with truth, balance, and the divine order that Ma’at represents.

In a time where spiritual diversity is vast, you’ve engaged with multiple spiritual systems. How do you foster inclusivity and unity among people of African descent while embracing different spiritual paths within Ra Sekhi Arts Temple?

I have had the privilege of studying various spiritual systems, including Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, African traditional systems such as the Akan, and Kemetic spiritual practices. What I’ve come to realize is that, at their core, they all convey similar teachings. These systems emphasize living righteously, treating others as we would want to be treated, and embodying good character and behavior.
This common thread of integrity allows us to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds, unified by the shared principles of truth, love, and righteousness. Love, after all, is the greatest healer, and when we can fully embrace unconditional love—for ourselves, for others, and for the world—we open the doors to deep, transformative healing.
In today’s world, filled with wars, hatred, and oppression, it’s crucial to remind ourselves that love stands in opposition to these destructive forces. Our role in the healing process is to help people understand that, despite our differences, we share more similarities. When we consciously choose to live in unity, with love, good character, and righteousness, we foster healing not just within ourselves but within our communities and the world.
For me, it doesn’t matter what name one uses to refer to the Creator. What matters is recognizing a higher power and striving to live according to the divine laws. When we commit to that, we can collaborate, heal, and love each other regardless of our backgrounds.
This is the foundation of what we practice—to increase our capacity to love, to nurture compassion and kindness. By doing so, we can live with a light heart. Holding onto anger, fear, or sadness weighs the heart down and makes it harder to love. But when we release or resolve these heavy emotions and find peace in our minds and hearts, we clear the way for love to flow freely.
Ultimately, love is the greatest healer, and it’s this healing energy of love that guides our work, helping us heal ourselves, each other, and the world.
